Abstract

SENISTERRA, G; DUCID, M. G  and  MARQUINA, J. Options of selection for properties of the wood and characters of growth in Populus spp. clonal trials. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.1, pp.40-49. ISSN 1851-3026.

The objective of the work was to study the genetic variation and clonal repeatability about properties of the wood and indicators of growth and yield in a group of poplar clones from a 10 years old trial located in two sites of "Pampa Ondulada" (Argentina). 11 hybrid poplar clones from intraespecific (P. deltoides) e interespecific (P. deltoides x P. x canadensis) crosses were studied to make predictions of genetic gain associated to different selection approaches. The clones had a statistically effect in the properties of the wood, growth and yield of the fibrous material. The interactions site x clone had a statistically effect in the longitude of fibers, growth and yield of the fibrous material, but not in the wood density. The phenotypic correlations among mean values of the clones for features of growth and yield were statistically significant. Neither phenotypic or genotypic association among the descriptive features of the quality of the wood were detected.. The hybrid poplar clonal selection for these two sites must be done site by site The clonal control on the properties of the wood was hard and stronger than the environmental one It's necessary to choose between growth and yield or wood density when an hybrid poplar clonal selection is being done with this clones in this sites.

Keywords : Poplars; Clonal repeatability; Wood density; Fiber length; Growth.
