Abstract

LORENZ, G.. Soil science in the 21st century: connecting system, functions and planning. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2015, vol.23, n.2, pp.105-106. ISSN 0328-0543.

The Vienna Soil Declaration, published in the International Year of Soils (2015), reaffirms traditional concepts and presents new approaches about soil, concluding with a series of recommendations for the future. Starting from this document, concepts of soil as a dynamic and complex system and those of soil functions and ecosystem services are revised respect to historical development and significance. Finally there is shown, for the case of spatial planning, how this concepts interact and integrate with these management process, focused in the harmonization of environmental services and human activities. It is at this point, where soil science is challenged, interacting with other disciplines, respect to the analysis and management of landscapes in the broadest sense.

Keywords : Soil system; Soil functions; Ecosystem services; Spatial planning; Landscape management; Soil evaluation.
