Abstract

ARAOZ, S.; JOSEAU, M. J.; MEEHAN, A.  and  HERNANDEZ, R.. Physical and Phyiological Quality of Baccharis crispa Sprengel. and Baccharis salicifolia Ruiz & Pav. seeds for their domestication. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2016, vol.24, n.2, pp.59-60. ISSN 0328-0543.

The objective was to determine the physical and physiological quality of B. crispa (“carqueja”) and B. salicifolia (“chilca”) seeds, B. crispa from Calamuchita and B. salicifolia from Capilla de los Remedios and La Estancita, places located in Córdoba, Argentina. The percentage of empty seeds was determined, germination potential was evaluated (GP), seedlings were characterized by ISTA categories and typified as genus Baccharis. Seed quality was categorized as suggested by De La Fuente. Four replications of 25 seeds were made. In B. crispa using unselected seeds while in B. salicifolia the seeds were selected through touch and only full seeds were considered. The seeds were sown in plastic trays on moist paper and placed in a germination chamber 20<=>30° C and photoperiod of 16 hours darkness -8 hours light. In carqueja 70 % of empty seeds were observed, while in chilca from Capilla de los Remedios 75 % and 45 % for those from La Estancita. The GP of carqueja were: control (20 %), GA3 (27 %), scarification (28 %), heat (26 %) and potassium nitrate (16 %) while in chilca from Capilla de los Remedios: control (36 %), cold (45 %) and heat (39 %) and from La Estancita: control (73 %), cold (68 %) and heat (66 %).The genus Baccharis was typified in Group B.2.1.1.1. Physiological quality of B. crispa was moderately low, while in B. salicifolia was intermediate and moderately high, these varying depending on the provenance.

Keywords : Baccharis sp.; Carqueja; Chilca; Quality seed; Pregerminative treatment; Empty seeds.
