Abstract

AYALA, M.  and  ENRIQUEZ, M. B.. Input from ethnobotany to the research in forest extension. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2017, vol.25, n.1, pp.63-68. ISSN 0328-0543.

Ethnobotany-related techniques are used to retrieve and register the knowledge about the native forest of the Qom community Misión Laishí, in Formosa. Thus, they become a tool for the forest extensionist that seeks to promote the revaluation of such ancestral knowledge related to the uses and applications of the species. Using ethnobotanical techniques, walks, workshops and interviews are conducted with informants, students and teachers of a secondary school in Laguna Gobernador. The inquire involves the tree and shrub species used, their most frequent uses or destinations, plant parts or organs used, the most common modes or forms of employment, and the social value of the native forest. The youngsters participate in field work, group interviews and workshops that assess species of ancestral interest for their community. It is determined that both the “white carob tree” (Prosopis alba Griseb) and the “caranday palm” (Copernicia alba Morong) are the most valuable species for the Qom people. The main use of the palm involves its leaves for basketry and the consumption of the white carob tree for liquors referred to as aloja and añapa. As for shrub species, their predominant use is traditional medicine. Ethnobotany contributes to the design of strategies for the conservation and sustainable management of ecosystems, through the documentation of experiences of management of ethnic groups, for what it contributes to the research work of the forest extensionist.
