Abstract

ESPINDOLA, Y.; ROMERO, L.; RUIZ DIAZ, R.  and  LUNA, C.. Influence of incubation conditions on germination of seeds of different individuals of Pterogyne nitens Tul ex Benth. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2018, vol.26, n.1, pp.5-17. ISSN 0328-0543.

There exist few studies related to viraró seed germination tending to improve the techniques for the proper management of this resource of timber, non-timber and ornamental importance. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the incubation temperature on the germination of Pterogyne nitens. The seeds used in this experiment were obtained from 12 specimens; the tests were performed in germination chambers at T1) 8±2 °C under lighting conditions of 17 Lux; T2) 27±2 °C and 3.728 Lux, both with a photoperiod of 14 hours; T3) room temperature, 29±2.5 ºC on average registered daily at greenhouse conditions; and T4) T1 for 21 days (cold incubation, 8±2 °C) and then T2 (27±2 °C) for 21 days. After 21 days of incubation both germinative energy, energy period, germination speed and germination speed index were evaluated. The results gave information about the effect of the incubation temperature on P. nitens seeds germination. Although a clear developmental pattern for each incubation condition could not be identified, it was determined that P. nitens needs temperatures around 29 °C on average to trigger the process. Additionally, a favorable effect for some vigor indicators was achieved when cold incubation when was tested. The information generated in this study will be useful for the nursery production of P. nitens; it also remarks the fact that germination tests should be complemented with those of viability tests in order to obtain more information on seed quality.
