Abstract

SCHIMPF, R.; LUDUENA, M. E.  and  CORONEL DE RENOLFI, M.. Diagnosis of the wood industry in Santiago del Estero, Argentina Study cases: Capital, Banda and Loreto. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2018, vol.26, n.1, pp.40-50. ISSN 0328-0543.

Due to the scarce differentiated information on the local wood industry available, this paper analyses the results of a survey distributed in 61 enterprises located in the Capital, Banda and Loreto Departments of the Province of Santiago del Estero to outline a diagnosis of its state of the art. The data were collected through in situ personal interviews; the company profiles and their technological status, the timberable species used, the commercialization cycle and the results of the activity were analyzed. An univariant descriptive analysis was carried out and all the sites were compared for their differential characteristics be highlighted. Strengths and weaknesses were determined as well. The results show that all three companies are long history micro-industries with few permanent medium-trained personnel. Machinery is adequate though obsolete with low utilization rate. The volume of wood processed is small. High costs, stuck sales and moderate profits predominate. The prospective is little favorable for the activity.

Keywords : wood mini-SMEs; strengths and weaknesses.
