Abstract

SENILLIANI, M. G.; GUZMAN, A.; ALVAREZ, P.  and  BRASSIOLO, M.. Estimating stem volume from a commercial thinning in plantations of Prosopis alba Griseb in Santiago del Estero. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2020, vol.28, n.2, pp.159-167. ISSN 0328-0543.

Reforestation using Prosopis alba Griseb has a high potential to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the productive systems in the arid and semi-arid zones. In Santiago del Estero, reforestation is an activity not yet consolidated and many of the plantations lack silvicultural management. Tough progress in the quality of both the planting material and initial silvicultural practices has been made recently, thinning is one of the practices that are not commonly carried out due to its high cost. This work aimed to obtain a preliminary model for estimating the stem volume in commercial thinning to provide information on the application of this practice, essential to improve the productivity of local plantations. Work upon 131 individuals from the second thinning of a 17-year-old plantation was done. Additionally, a volume function of individual trees was constructed, by testing different models of linear and non-linear functions. The mixed linear regression model (linear model with combined variable) with variance of errors with exponential variance function was that that best fit and is preliminarily recommended, for determining the volumes of individual stems in commercial thinning of reforestations with Prosopis alba in Santiago del Estero.
