Abstract

VILLEGAS VALVERDE, CA  and  C. FAXAS GARCIA, ME. Nutrition in Immunity and Cancer. Rev. argent. endocrinol. metab. [online]. 2014, vol.51, n.1, pp.30-36. ISSN 1851-3034.

Good nutrition is essential for life. Nutrients provide, the necessary components for normal body functioning, including those required by the immune system. An effective immune response represents a first line of defense of the host against various abnormal changes, such as transformation of normal cells into cancer cells. During carcinogenesis, an association between malnutrition and escapes from immune system control is frequently observed. In addition, changes in the immune system can be more marked in cases of established tumors, because of other contributing factors inherent to therapies that also produce discrete to severe changes in the usual energy consumption with the intervention of inflammation mechanisms. In this paper, we review the associations between nutrition, the origin of cancer and immune system functioning, as well as the therapeutic potential of nutritional components in cancer.
