Abstract

REY, Héctor D.. Destiny of three economic activities in the Nahuel Huapi area at the beginning of the twentieth century: forestal and lumber business; cereal production and processing; tourism. Rev. Pilquen [online]. 2004, n.6. ISSN 1851-3123.

At the beginning of the past century, S.C. de Bariloche (here in after called SCB) situated in the Nahuel Huapi area showed a strong "centrality" owing to its strategic geographical position (on the trans-Andean pass of Puyehue) and its administrative and commercial services. It constituted together with the Chilean area -on the other side of the Andes- a consolidate socio-economic region, mainly due to the lack of efficient means of transport to the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, the Nahuel Huapi area mainly exported bovines in exchange for industrialized products that came from the nearby ports of the Pacific Ocean. At the same time other economic activities were generated or consolidated. Their development constitutes the object of study of the present work. Among them we have selected three: forestal and lumber business which arose in order to satisfy both local and extra regional markets on the basis of coniferous forests; cereal production and processing for local consumption; and tourism, which was natural consequence of the beautiful landscape. In 1934 Buenos Aires and S.C. de Bariloche were connected by railway and meant the beginning of the end for the first two activities because it gave way to a successful extra regional competitive market, and at the same time it steadily increased tourism which has become the economic basis of the Nahuel Huapi area up to these days.

Keywords : Economic activities; Nahuel Huapi area; At the beginning of the twentieth century.
