Abstract

PILIA DE ASSUNCAO, Nelda  and  FAZIO, Silvina Celeste. Three looks on Latin American Modernity. Rev. Pilquen [online]. 2005, n.7. ISSN 1851-3123.

This article presents a contrastive analysis of the discursive construction of modernity in Latin America according to the critical reflection of the essayists Octavio Paz in Tiempo Nublado, Carlos Fuentes in NuevoTiempo Mexicano and Luis Costa Lima in Pensando nos Trópicos. In each case, we have tried to identify the place of the enunciation, from where the enunciator expresses itself and the enunciative mechanisms chosen in accordance with the purpose looked for and the sociocultural context of each essay. As stated by Liliana Weinberg, the essays display, with an expository style, marked by a vast intertextuality ( Costa Lima), and with an aesthetic concern predominance (Octavio Paz and carlos Fuentes), a real evaluative nature that projects on the world to have an effect or take part in it, or express views.

Keywords : Essay; Modernity; Latin America; Place of enunciation; Enunciative mechanisms; Discursivity.
