Abstract

ROMANO, Silvina  and  VASEN, Federico. Developmental universities in a new territory: the experience on the National University of Tierra del Fuego. Rev. Pilquen. secc. cienc. soc. [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.4, pp.45-62. ISSN 1851-3123.

In this article, we analyze the project and the institutional trajectory of the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), located in a newly constituted territory. First, we review the different institutional models that have emerged for universities and relate them to the experience of UNTDF. Based on the analysis of institutional documents, we point out that its institutional project and other regulations can be related to the model of developmental universities advanced by Arocena, Göransson and Sutz as a model for higher education institutions that focus their third mission on contributing to territorial socioeconomic development. We examine some tensions that have emerged in the last ten years. In this regard, we find that research and contribution to development have been developed to a lesser extent than teaching. This has brought the institution closer to the 'professionalist' model that is the norm in the Argentine higher education system.
