The objective of the article is to analyze the professionalization of the municipality of Buenos Aires in the period 1852-1900 and, more specifically, the role played by doctors and hygienists engineers in the formation of the appliance municipal. The article discusses the formation of the municipal health offices and engineering in the context of the consolidation of the national state. The central hypothesis is that the functions of monitoring and improving urban went from being exercised by neighbors to be carried out by professionals, in parallel with the formation of the state and the university careers involved in its operation. The sources used were the Municipal digests of Buenos Aires from 1852-1900 and the method, the documentary analysis.
