Abstract

Los congresos hispanoamericanos en el siglo XIX: identidad, amenazas externas e intereses en la construcción del regionalismo. Ciclos hist. econ. soc. [online]. 2015, vol.26, n.45, pp.88-117. ISSN 1851-3735.

This paper analyzes the process of construction of Latin American regionalism in the 19th century through the study of the Hispanic American Congresses. By questioning the argument that states that the existence of a common identity is the centrally causal factor to explain the so called Hispanic American regionalism, this article highlights the importance of systemic variables associated to the international politics of that period. The importance of the domestic political processes, in particular the process of formation of national preferences, which determined the success or failure of the forces favorable to regional unity, is also highlighted.

Keywords : Regionalism; Integration; Cooperation; Latin America; 19th century; Hispanic American Congresses.
