Abstract

MADRID, Eduardo. Argentina-Brasil: the Mercosur's avatars, 1985-2003. Ciclos hist. econ. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.27, n.46, pp.1-20. ISSN 1851-3735.

This paper aims to analyze the complex path initiated by Argentina and Brazil in order to reinforce the old attempts at regional integration between both countries and their neighbors. The result of this process was the origin of the Mercosur, a strategic alliance that had to deal with the asymmetries among its main partners in the search of agreements; which was about to fail on different occasions, such as when countries like Argentina suffered a serious crises during the hiatus of centuries. However, the political goodwill on behalf of their governments made the regional bloc advance, despite the pressure exerted by the continental power to weaken the bloc or co-opt them by means of its hegemonic proposals.

Keywords : Mercosur , Argentina , Brazil , integration.
