Abstract

GARCIA BERNADO, Rolando. The profitability of soy production in Argentina. An empirical contribution to the theoretical debate. Ciclos hist. econ. soc. [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.50, pp.1-20. ISSN 1851-3735.

This paper analyzes the profit rates in the soy production during 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns for extensive crops. We begin by modeling based in enterprises management sheets, to build an estimation of production costs and profitability. We apply this model to different technical management situations to present typical adjustments made by agricultural companies facing low profitability situations. We argue then that localization had great impact on differential rates where the existence of better lands closer to trading points is given. Finally, we argue the need for deeper regional analysis to adequate our understanding of the evolution of agrarian capital in Argentina, and the importance of surveying the determinants beneath the great concentration and centralization of the production during the recent period.
