Abstract
IBANEZ, Javier Pérez. Regional trajectories in the global automotive chain. Heterogeneity or homogeneity?. Ciclos hist. econ. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.33, n.59, pp.61-70. Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 1851-3735. http://dx.doi.org/7.
The objective of this article is to evaluate the trends towards regionalization deployed by the automotive industry at the global level based on trade (Comtrade) and production (OICA) data between 2001 and 2018. To this aim, the first section reviewed the existing literature on the global automotive value chain and then, in the second section, analyzed the performance of the chains between 2001 and 2018 based on four variables: automobile production, level of regionalization, foreign trade and trade performance. The interaction between these four variables will allow us to compare the paths that each region of the world took within the global chain during the first 18 years of the 21st century. As a result, it was concluded that although the regionalization of the chain was a process of growing relevance as of 2001, not all regions followed the same specialization patterns.
