Abstract

JACKSON, Robert H. Demographic patterns of sedentary and non-sedentary populations: Jesuit missions in lowland South America and Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda Region of Mexico. Mem. am. [online]. 2017, vol.25, n.2, pp.47-68. ISSN 1851-3751.

This article discusses demographic paterns on Jesuit missions in lowland South America (Chiquitos, Guaraní) and the Sierra Gorda region of Mexico, including the effects of epidemics of highly contagious diseases such as smallpox and measles. It examines the diferences in the demographic profile of sedentary and non-sedentary indigenous groups, as well as other factors that determined demographic paterns. It concludes that there were meaningful differences in demographic paterns.
