Abstract

SALUZZO, H; REINOSO, PD  and  MARTINEZ, V. Characterization and growth evaluation of Paspalum almum, Paspalum denticulatum and Paspalum vaginatum as lawns. Phyton (B. Aires) [online]. 2015, vol.84, n.1, pp.51-57. ISSN 1851-5657.

Morphological and growth characteristics of two Paspalum native species, and an enhanced species of the same genus, were evaluated for their potential use as lawns. Color; texture, stolon ength and diameter, node number and length, width and number of leaves were determined under grass management conditions. The used plant material derived from the Paspalum collection (belongng to the PID UNER 2139 research project carried out at Faculad de Ciencias Agropecuarias). The trial consisted of twelve 1 m2 plots in four completely randomized blocks and was conducted from November 2010 to March 2011. All the characterictics were meaured from the growth of three stolons per plot and per species. The analysis of total average value of morphological descriptors showed ignificant diferences among species regarding leaf width, stolon ength and number of nodes, as well as growth rate. P. vaginatum howed higher leaf production, whereas P. denticulatum presented onger total stolon length. Standard values of the obtained vegetaive descriptors indicated the possibility of using P. denticulatum as ornamental grass, since it presented long internodes and very thick exture leaves. As P. vaginatum was an enhanced species, it showed, under trial weather conditions, its grass characteristics distinguished by their short, medium texture leaves; short and thin internodes and he higher number of nodes and leaf production.
