Abstract

NUNEZ, Carlos E.. Morfología Fibrosa de la Madera del Eucalyptus grandis Implantado en la Mesopotamia Argentina. 2. Definición de los tipos morfológicos de fibras: Fiber Morphology of the Wood of Eucalyptus grandis Growing in the Argentinean Mesopotamia. Definition of the morphological types of fibers. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2009, n.11, pp.26-32. ISSN 1851-7587.

The present research work is part of a series on fiber morphology from exotic Eucalyptus tree wood in Mesopotamia, Argentina. (Mesopotamia comprises Misiones, Corrientes and Entre Ríos provinces). Facing difficulties regarding the classification of different fibrous types using botanical definitionsm the task was based on some paper related parameters and pits density. Some pairs of variables were tested and the relationship between pits and fieltrability was selected. Five hundred elements were tested, plotted and grouped into 3 defined types with an A population of libriform fibers regardless type and amount of pits and a fieltrability coefficient greater than 70, a B population of elements having a fieltrability coefficient lower than 70 and a pit density lower that 80 pits/mm and a C population with an irrelevant number of elements and paper features consisting of vasicentric tracheids (elements with more that 80 pits/mm). We can define in this fashion a disgregate fiber sample as a function of the proportion of the population mentioned, since a pure A population pulp should have good physico-mechanical properties and a pure population B better formation properties. Because both types have different in tree physiological properties, a genetic improvement could be developed in order to obtain different species suitable to specific purposes. It could be established that fibers cannot be defined by the type and quantity of pits as it is the case of general botanical definitions.
