Abstract

GALLOSO, Patricia C; LEZCANO, María Teresa  and  QUIROGA, Marina. Evaluation of phenotypic methods for the detection of strains of pseudomonas aeruginosa producing metallo-β-lactamases. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2010, n.14, pp.8-13. ISSN 1851-7587.

With the aim to compare simple phenotypic methods for detecting metallo-β-lactamases in low complexity laboratories, we studied 15 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains resistant or with decreased susceptibilityto carbapenems, collected from in-patients at health centers of Posadas between April 2007 and March 2008. The methods tested were the modified Hodge test, the double disk synergy test (imipenem/EDTA and imipenem/ dipicolinic acid), the imipenem-EDTA combined disk test, the modified Hodge test, and the MIC of imipenem vs imipenem/EDTA. MIC reduction with imipenem/EDTA combination was observed in 1/15 strains studied. Only the modified Hodge test and the modified Hodge test gave results comparable to the ones obtained with the MIC. Considering our results, we suggest the implementation of at least two methods, selected according to the technical capabilities of the laboratory, in order to investigate metallo-β-lactamases, both in clinical practice and for surveillance purposes.

Keywords : Phenotypic methods; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Metallo-β-lactamases.
