Abstract
ARMOA, Natalia et al. Metabolic syndrome and lipidie disorders In overweight and obese children. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2010, n.14, pp.19-24. ISSN 1851-7587.
We aimed to determine the frequency of Metabolic Syndrome (MS), the distribution of its components, and lipidic abnormalities in 64 overweight and obese children aged 4 to 14 years old, treated at Hospital de Pediatria in Posadas - Misiones. A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 85 and 94 percentiles was considered overweight, and a BMI equal to or higher than 95 percentile was considered obesity. MS frequency in obese children was 35.3 % and 0 % in overweight children. The order of frequency of MS components in obese children was: abdominal obesity 94.1 %, hypertriglyceridemia 47.1 %, low HDL cholesterol 37.3 %, hypertension 21.6 %, hyperglycemia 3.9 %. Those in overweight children were: hypertriglyceridemia 46.2 %, abdominal obesity 38.5 %, low HDL cholesterol 30.8 %, hypertension 15.4 % and fasting hyperglycemia 0 %. The most common lipidic abnormalities were hypertriglyceridemia, high ratios of triglyceride/HDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol. These findings suggest the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce the frequency of chilhood obesity and prevent MS and dyslipidemia.
