Abstract

NUNEZ, Carlos Eduardo. Fiber morphology of eucalyptus grandis wood implanted in the argentinean mesopotamia: 4 - In relation to juvenile wood. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2011, n.15, pp.25-29. ISSN 1851-7587.

The aim of this work was to determine the variation of the properties of wood in the first years of growth of Eucalyptus grandis trunks. Radii were measured in an attempt to identify the age until which modifications are produced. For this purpose, we analyzed the fiber density and length of 20-year-old Eucalyptus grandis trees. As regards fiber density, it was found that it decreased in the first years and then increased steadily up to the cambial zone. The low-density area between the third and eighth year was called"infantile wood". Fiber length increased continuously, until approximately the fourteenth ring, and then remained almost constant. No defined trace of"infantile wood" for fiber density was found. The conclusion is that wood is young until 20 years of age and that from the point of view of fiber length, wood is young until 14 years of age.
