Abstract

This paper presents some results yielded by the research project “Teaching of Natural Science to 11 to 14 years old students attending compulsory education, in Candelaria, Misiones”, carried out during 2010-2012. The purpose of this study is to characterize the problems that hinder students´ performance in 7th grade at primary school and 1st class at secondary school. The methodology used was qualitative with an interpretive approach. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, classroom observations, documents analysis and reflective workshops. Problems that hinder school career, the development of scientific skills and retention of students in the educational system were identified. These cover curricula and teaching, repetition of content, the need for autonomy and self-management of learning and reduced timetables devoted to the teaching and learning of Natural Sciences at primary level.
