Abstract

RAMIREZ HITA, Susana. The contribution of the ethnographic method to the register of the epidemiological data: Quechua aborigine sociocultural epidemiology of Potosí city. Salud colectiva [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.1, pp.63-85. ISSN 1669-2381.

This article intends to show the usefulness of the ethnographic method for epidemiological registers. Through the example of the Bolivian city of Potosí, it is shown how the epidemiological data which served as a basis for the implementation of sanitary policies and programs did not represent reality. We highlight the limits of the survey technique and the registers sustained exclusively with quantitative methodology. From the sociocultural epidemiology register, we gather the knowledge of all the representatives of the different systems of health attention recognized by the inhabitants of the city, in order to detect the most important problems in public health in Potosí.

Keywords : Anthropology; Cultural; Indigenous Population; Health Public Policy; Bolivia.
