Abstract

DENI GAMBOA, Lydia. Walter Chatton and Adam of Wodeham: two medieval functionalist perspectives on the nature of some mental states. Scripta Mediaevalia [online]. 2015, vol.8, n.1. ISSN 1851-8753.

Our goal in this article is to prove that, on the one hand, in opposition to William of Ockham's view, Walter Chatton and Adam of Wodeham's theories of the nature of mind are coincident with the contemporary doctrine according to which mental states are functional states of certain type. On the other hand, the aim of this article is to reveal that such medieval metaphysical functionalist theories support an economic medieval perspective concerning the composition of a human being.

Keywords : Walter Chatton; Adam of Wodeham; Mental states; Medieval philosophy; Metaphysical functionalism.
