Abstract

QUINTANA, María Marta. From proof of identification to the basis of personal identity: a problematization of the appeal to DNA in the speech of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo. Estud. filos. práct. hist. ideas [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.2, pp.1-20. ISSN 1851-9490.

This article focuses on the discourse of the Association of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, with the primary aim of analyzing, problematizing and relativizing the use of DNA as a basis for the personal identity of children who disappeared/were “appropriated” during the last civic-military dictatorship (1976-1983) in Argentina. Following Paul Ricoeur’s elaborations, the first part of the article distinguishes two senses of the notion of identity (idem and ipse). The second part analyzes the role of the State in the construction of identity and kinship. The third part looks at the re-narrativization of identity involved in the restitution of children/youths who were “appropriated” during and by state terrorism.

Keywords : Appropriation of Children; Discourse; Personal Identity; DNA.
