Abstract

ETCHECHURY BARRERA, Mario. Imagined Peripheries: Civil Wars and Protectorate Dreams in the Rio de la Plata Region (1838-1865). Prohistoria [online]. 2014, vol.22, pp.00-00. ISSN 1851-9504.

Between the state building process of the Estado Oriental del Uruguay (1828-1830) and the War of the Triple Alianza against Paraguay (1865-1870) a meaningful part of the dominant groups in Montevideo struggled to establish protectorates, Hanseatic cities, neutral territories or international guardianships which entailed the total or partial resignation from the political sovereignty. From a global perspective which helps reconstructing ties between both sides of the Atlantic, in this essay I argue that the conjunction of this projects, that involved agents from France, Spain, Brazil and Italy, was an autonomous tradition whose components refer to several ideological sources and political models in circulation

Keywords : Informal Empire; Rio de la Plata; Uruguay; War; Diplomacy.
