Abstract

CALETTI GARCIADIEGO, Bárbara. Militias and Guaranis in Yapeyú: The Defense of the "Uruguay Border" in the Early Nineteenth Century. Prohistoria [online]. 2015, vol.23, pp.47-70. ISSN 1851-9504.

This article analyzes the defensive system of the "Uruguay border" in the viceregal period, which hasn't been studied in depth yet. The focus is on the early Nineteenth century, when the Aviles' reforms, the shortage of veteran forces, the Portuguese annexation of Eastern Missions and the dismantling of Guarani militias coincided. Also, it outlines some difficulties and dilemmas faced by the colonial administration regarding the military reorganization of the Intendancy and "Uruguay border" in the first decade of the century.

Keywords : Guarani militias; Portuguese-Spanish border; Eastern Missions; Yapeyu; Uruguay River.
