Abstract

AYALA REYES, Susana. The subject of Ch'ol language and culture in secondary schools in Tabasco, Mexico, and the contradictory semantics of intercultural and bilingual education. Runa [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.1, pp.189-209.  Epub Feb 04, 2022. ISSN 1851-9628.  http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/runa.v42i3.10057.

In this article, I present the process of creation and implementation of the subject of Ch'ol indigenous language and culture for secondary school students in Tabasco and promoted by the General Coordination of Intercultural and Bilingual Education (CGEIB) of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) in Mexico. From this case, I analyze the continuities and semantic contradictions in the discourses around Intercultural and Bilingual Education in the educational reforms from 2000 to 2018. I combine documentary and ethnographic data to study its consequences on three scales of political practice and question why, despite the proclamation that intercultural education is for all, in fact it is exclusively aimed at the population categorized as indigenous.

Keywords : Intercultural bilingual education; Educational reforms; Language policies; Discourse analysis.
