Abstract

The public has been gaining controversial centrality in the contemporary agenda within the postmodern condition and the dominance of neoliberal globalization, which produced, between the end and the beginning of the millennium, the image of its retreatment. In this essay, I try to establish from an anthropological perspective certain conceptual bases for a dialectical approach to the public taking into account three of its registers: that of the specifically human communicative act, that of the socio-cultural universe traditionally covered by the ethnographic research of societies without a State and finally questioning the archaeological record for the historical conditions of the emergence of the public in structural terms with the first States. The search implies an opening of its restricted meaning to modern state and institutional apparatuses, although it is intended that what has been contributed can be projected towards the political field of contemporary studies on the public.
