Since glyphosate-resistant transgenic soybean was introduced in the mid-9s, the global agro-food system has radically changed. Experts and international organizations supported the implementation of biotechnology in agriculture saying it was the solution to many of the global food and resource-based problems facing the world. However, this view was not universally accepted. Strong criticisms and controversies arose regarding the safety of the new agricultural production techniques, the quality and reliability of the derived food, the economic and environmental sustainability of the new agro-food model, and the distribution of its benefits. In Argentina, the third largest producer of RR soybeans, these debates and conflicts grew during the last ten years. In this article I propose a theoretical approach and a methodology to address scientific-political controversies concerning RR soybeans, focusing on contentious processes involving both experts and non-experts.
