Abstract

QUEREILHAC, Soledad. El intelectual teósofo: La actuación de Leopoldo Lugones en la revista Philadelphia (1898-1902) y las matrices ocultistas de sus ensayos del Centenario. Prismas [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.1. ISSN 1852-0499.

The purpose of this dissertation is to review the content and ambitions of Leopoldo Lugones' essays in Philadephia, the theosophical magazine where he synthesized, between 1898 and 1902, his conceptions on science, philosophy and art, based on the spiritualist foundations of the doctrine. Far from being casual writings, my hypothesis stands that they represent the first steps in the adoption and further personal reformulation of theosophical ideas. This is also the system of ideas that, years later during the Centenary of the Revolution, would structure, and provide arguments for, his essays on national culture such as Prometeo (1910), Elogio de Ameghino (1915) and even the famous El payador (1916). We aim to uncover the tight bonds that connect theosophical beliefs with the thought of Lugones, and to prove that his theosophical readings represented one of the main sources of his so-called modernist "eclecticism".
