Abstract

RAMADA CURTO, Diogo; DOMINGOS, Nuno  and  BANDEIRA JERONIMO, Miguel. Entre la moral y la razón: la sociología histórica de Barrington Moore Jr. Prismas [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.1, pp.63-98. ISSN 1852-0499.

In this text about the work of Historical Sociologist Barrington Moore Jr., his research program is analyzed, especially the way in which he proficiently mobilized the comparative method to understand longue durée historical processes. This program reached its full completion in his seminal work The Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy: Lord and Peasant in the Making of the Modern World (1966), in which Moore Jr. illuminates the diversity of trajectories that lead to modernity. This text also delivers an ampler assessment of the international academic field and, more specifically, of the relationships between the university and the political sphere. Provider of a marked originality in his historical reasoning, Moore Jr was born in an academic background powerfully characterized by the political constraint of research projects: in a context of cold war, knowing the enemy became a crucial resource for governments. Moving beyond a mere analysis of its content, the interpretation of his work offers significant indications of the historical context of its production and of the ways in which specific analytical frameworks, methods, concepts and subject-matters became scientifically relevant, and still persist today.

Keywords : Barrington Moore Jr.; Social Sciences; Cold War.
