Abstract

PERSELLO, Ana Virginia. “Managed economy”: the itinerary of a concept and the evaluation an experience. Prismas [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.1, pp.75-95. ISSN 1852-0499.

The concept “managed economy” and its association with the evolution of the concrete experience of its implementation describe an arc going from the moment in which it was assumed that in Argentina the State “managed” the economy, to the first years of the 1940´s. This arc goes from the elucidation of its meaning and the acceptance -as extraordinary expedients- of the politics that accompanied it, to the reactivation of a debate concerning the evaluation of its results. This is the itinerary that we propose to follow in this paper through an examination of the parliamentary debates, periodical publications, journals and a corpus of books written by experts. It is not our purpose to reconstruct economic politicies, or to analyse the abstract theory -not even to compare different policies in order to show deviations between them-. That is to say, it is not the aim of this paper to analyse the orthodoxy or heterodoxy of the measures implemented to overcome the crisis, but rather to follow the itinerary of a concept as it was formulated and the way in which the experience associated with it was assessed. It is not this paper’s pretention to offer an exhaustive and definitive coverage of this topic, but rather to initiate its discussion and revision.

Keywords : Managed economy; State; Conceptual history.
