Abstract

CHIARAMONTE, José Carlos. Reflections on Tulio Halperin’s work. Prismas [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.1, pp.116-137. ISSN 1852-0499.

The article summarizes Halperin’s valuable historiographic achievements and seeks to explain two aspects of his work: the oversight of the fundamental role of sovereignty and his concern about how to overcome the lack of connection between social and political history undergone by the work of Braudel, his master. The surprising verification that in Revolución y guerra. Formación de una élite dirigente en la Argentina criolla, despite what is indicated in the subtitle, neither Argentina nor Argentines exist, shows the consequences of that absence of definition of the nature of the exercise of sovereignty subsequent to the events of 1810. The article then goes on to investigate the extent to which Halperin’s attatchment to the historiography of the Annales may have influenced his work. The text analyses Halperin’s reflections about what was missing in Braudel’s work as he finds a successful partial solution, the combination of social and political history in Revolución y guerra, as well as the political issues that were left out of that solution.

Keywords : Halperin Donghi; Historiography; Political History; Fernand Braudel.
