Abstract

CAIMARI, Lila. “A cada uno lo que es propio”. Vanguardia periodística y cobertura global en los diarios de Buenos Aires a fines del siglo XIX. Prismas [online]. 2021, vol.25, n.2, pp.179-186.  Epub Dec 20, 2021. ISSN 1852-0499.

“Giving each one what is proper”. Journalistic avant-garde and global coverage in Buenos Aires newspapers at the end of the XIXth century

The conflict developed in Cuba between 1895 and 1898 brought about major informative challenges to newspapers in Buenos Aires. Indeed, readers with diverse political inclinations objected to the type of coverage offered by the most modern of them, La Nación. Taking its cue from these critical reactions, this article looks at the definition of journalistic modernity prevailing in this important daily. It argues that, contrary to those New York-based newspapers that cultivated the figure of the heroic correspondent, the notion of informative avant-garde was displaced toward the construction of an effect of news omniscience and a prismatic repertoire of opinions.
