Abstract

RIBARD, Dinah. Paths of Words. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.186-191.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1307.

Taking into consideration the idea of “path”, a rhetorical image frequently used by Roger Chartier in his works as a catachresis, the article explores the course that his work on the “cultural” origins of the French Revolution has taken since its first edition in 1990. Departing, at that time, from the adjective “intellectual”, Chartier proposed to recover the thought of the philosophes of the Enlightenment in direct relation to the postulates offered by cultural sociology and to try to unite the logic of social practices with the ideas from the uses that the revolutionaries made of them. The article seeks to measure the impact of a proposal that became a historiographical turning point to rethink the revolutionary fact to the detriment of a traditional intellectual history. However, the question remains as to its current validity in an era marked by a renewed vision of the history of ideas.

Keywords : Roger Chartier; French Revolution; Cultural and Intellectual History; Enlightenment Thought; Social Practices.
