Abstract

TURNOVSKY, Geoffrey. Bringing the World of Books to the Grand Public. Roger Chartier and the Art of Book Review. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.192-203.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1308.

The aim of this article is to reconstruct the role that, since the 1980s, Roger Chartier played as a writer of reviews for the general public in the newspaper Le Monde, reviews whose profusion and continuity represent a true global chronicle of Western historiography. Within the framework of a French “high popularization”, Chartier became the transnational intermediary between a non-specialized public and French or foreign intellectual production and, in doing so, succeeded in expanding his concept of “book” as a historical object: no longer only as an option for academic research, but also as a printed matter capable of transmitting ideas outside university circles. Finally, the article culminates with the position Chartier has taken in the international public arena regarding the future of the book, the future of libraries and the changes in the practice of reading in an era marked by the hegemony of the Internet.

Keywords : Roger Chartier; Book Review; High Divulgation; French Historiography; Le Monde des livres.
