Abstract

MULLER, Bertrand. From the Order of Books to Documentary Regimes. A Work Proposal. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.204-213.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1309.

Based on the 1934 Traité de documentation, written by the Belgian jurist Paul Otlet, the article explores the importance of the invention of intellectual and material devices to rationally circumscribe what, even at that time, was assumed to be a documentary invasion. The article essentially examines the causes and effects of the proliferation of texts in the light of the concept of “documentary regime”, i.e., the set of devices for the production, management, classification, preservation and communication of information through diversified supports that are inscribed in specific processing logics, a long-lasting history that is cultural, intellectual, technological, social, economic and political. Against this background, it is analyzed how Roger Chartier, crossing a history of written culture with a sociology of texts, probed the multiple relations between discourses, their material inscriptions, circulations, modes of appropriation and reading.
