Abstract

PRIETO OLAVARRIA, Cristina; CHIAVAZZA, Horacio; PORTA, Vanina  and  BONTORNO, Enzo. CERAMIC VARIABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES IN A CULTURAL BOUNDARY SITE. CERAMIC TECHNOLOGICAL STYLES OF DESAGUADERO RIVER (PA68) (MENDOZA, WEST CENTRAL ARGENTINA). Relaciones [online]. 2016, vol.41, n.1, pp.1-10. ISSN 0325-2221.

In ceramics studies from the archaeological sites of the arid northeastern plain o/Mendoza, it was detected a great variability, which transcends the known ceramic types of the área. This paper analyze the technological ceramic styles from the PA68, a site located on a dune inserted inside the permanent watercourse and old wetlands of Desaguadero River, which has been characterized as the eastern boundary of Agrelo and Viluco cultures, and the north-south corridor from San Juan (in the north) to La Pampa (towards the south).. The pottery variability detected at the site, allowed to propose that, its location in a strategic área, plus the cultural boundary character of the river, stimulated the circulation, exchange and settlement of people from diverse origins and who carried vessels of different pottery traditions in a period (1200 and 300 years BP) marked by different environmental conditions.

Keywords : cultural boundary - West Central Argentina - Desaguadero River - ceramic -technological styles.
