Abstract

ROCA, M. Victoria; SALVATELLI, Lorena  and  LEYRIA, Mónica. ARCHAEOLOGY OF YERBA PRODUCTION IN MISIONES. FIRS TAPPROACH TO AN OLD BARBACUÁ DRYER IN THE VILLAGE OF MÁRTIRES. Relaciones [online]. 2023, vol.48, n.1, pp.6-6. ISSN 0325-2221.  http://dx.doi.org/10.24215/18521479e066.

The purpose of this work is to inform the first results of the field work carried out in the village of Mártires, province of Misiones following the finding of a subterranean structure. At first, it was related to mysterious tunnels built by Jesuits. Several information sources were used to understand and characterize these constructions. In this work we present the surveys fulfilled at the site Mártiresl and are analysed in the light of document sources and oral information from a criticalperspective. The research showed that such construction is a yerba dryer using the barbacuá system. It is the first time that a barbacuá structure is studied from the archaeology viewpoint.

Keywords : barbacuá; yerba mate; subterranean structure; historical archaeology; Misiones.
