Abstract
GALLARDO, Diego Jorge. CERAMICS, ICONOGRAPHY AND SYMMETRICAL STRUCTURES. ANALYSIS OF THE DESIGNS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRADITION OF THE PIEDMONT OF JUJUY (2000-1500 AP). Relaciones [online]. 2023, vol.48, suppl.2, pp.5-5. ISSN 0325-2221.
The concept of style has been widely used in archaeology; however, its uses have not included the idea of analyzing geometric designs according to a mathematically standardized nomenclature. The objective of this work is to characterize the geometric designs of the so-called San Francisco tradition (2000BP), considering their symmetrical arrangements. Also, to evaluate the distribution and relationship of symmetries with different morphological groups. We worked with ceramic assemblages from two sectors of the Moralito site and with different whole pieces from private and state collections, all assigned to the same tradition. The results suggest that most of the geometric designs of the San Francisco style are structured around a few recurrent classes of symmetries. A differential distribution of symmetries and morphological groups was also observed in relation to the sectors analyzed and a correlation between geometric patterns and container classes.
