Abstract

This paper aimes at briefly describing the history of the teaching of Spanish in Brazil. I here comment the appearence of MERCOSUR, which encouraged the teaching and learning of Spanish in the biggest Latin America country. I also discuss the hegemonic discourse present in the wish of learning the language, the treatment given to the Latin America Spanish variants and pre-Hispanic art. The corpus on which I base my análisis consist of didactic handbooks adopted by the Triângulo Mineiro schools. As theorical framework I follow the work of researches such as Bugel, Domínguez, Kulikowski, Montañés among others
