Abstract

VELISONE, Julia. The uses of republicanism in the reinterpretation of democracy: Analysis of the political discourse in present-day Argentina. Estud. - Cent. Estud. Av., Univ. Nac. Córdoba [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.115-132. ISSN 1852-1568.

Abstract Recent decades have been marked by the rise of right-wing sectors in democratic governments, in parallel to the crisis of legitimacy and representation of that system. In Argentina, these processes are linked to the growing use of republicanism in political discourse, as well as its significance in relation to democracy. Starting from this scenario, this paper investigates the uses and meanings of republicanism and its interpretation of democracy in the political discourse of present-day Argentina. To this end, the paper studies the articles in the newspapers La Nación and Clarín in 2019 in which the terms republican/republicanism are used, understanding their relevance in view of the mediatisation of politics and the increased use of such concepts in public debate, particularly in an electoral context in which such discursive disputes are enhanced. Based on the above, the paper presents the redefinitions of democracy and the link between republicanism and its shortcomings, as well as the political uses of these meanings, from the discursive constructions of right-wing sectors.

Keywords : Republicanism; Democracy; Political Discourse; Right Wing.
