Abstract
GONZALEZ, Fernando Antonio Ignacio and LONDON, Silvia. Contributions to the identification and quantification of externalities of the foresto industry: the case of Puerto Piray (Misiones, Argentina). SaberEs [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.2, pp.129-151. ISSN 1852-4418.
The forestry activity in Misiones (Argentina) presents a great importance on the local economy: this sector contributes with 9.8% of Geographical Gross Product and represents 43% of exports (with 173 millions of dollars in 2015). Parallely, a great quantity of resources are employed in this activity, in relation with the hectares for cultivate and also inputs and water resources. This work was is a contribution to the quantification of the magnitude of the social, economic and environmental impacts generated by the industrial forestry activity in Puerto Piray, especially covering 4 dimensions: health, biodiversity and native forests, availability of water resources and socio-economic aspects of employment and housing tenure. It was found that there are high rates of incidence of various types of medical conditions, significantly higher than the national and provincial average (cancer, allergy, bronchitis). On the other hand, the existence of empirical evidence was detected, in consonance with the perception of the inhabitants, about the negative impact that intensive forest plantations could have on the biodiversity in the area. In the case of water resources, the empirical evidence was not concordant with the perception of the interviewees. Finally, it was found that forestry does not constitute a significant source of employment in the analyzed population nucleus.
