Abstract

GUIDOTTI, Marina L.. El estereotipo del “gallego” en el género chico criollo. Olivar [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.25, e003. ISSN 1852-4478.

The brief theatrical productions that emerged between 1890 and 1940 are part of the genre called “género chico criollo” which presents unique characteristics in terms of themes, characters, settings and conflicts that differentiate it from the Spanish “teatro por secciones o teatro por horas”. In the Río de la Plata, these works –generally called “sainetes”– were composed by prominent playwrights from Argentina and Uruguay for a largely immigrant public in order to provide entertainment and foster understanding of an unfamiliar culture and country. The large Galician community based around the Río de la Plata, whose contributions impacted the host community in a crucial moment for the consolidation of the Argentinean identity, had a strong presence in these sketches. In them, it is possible to trace stereotypes of two natures: negative –brute force, greed, ignorance, stubbornness and moodiness– and positive –loyalty, honesty, kindness, generosity, and responsibility to both family and work–. This paper analyzes representations of the Galician community with regard to the transmission of values, conservation of cultural roots, ethical principles and the desire for social advancement.

Keywords : sainete; stereotype; Galician; values; social mobility..
