This article examines both the material and the spiritual meaning and functionality of the space of the desert in the legend of St. Mary of Egypt, one of the most popular medieval saints, representative of the hagiographical prototype of penitents – according to the narration of Vida de Santa María Egipciaca, a Castilian poem composed in the early 13th century but transmitted at the end of the 14th century in El Escorial MS. K-III-4.
