Abstract

GARCIA BARRERA, Mabel. "Pewma" in mapuche poetry. Pap. trab. - Cent. Estud. Interdiscip. Etnolingüíst. Antropol. Sociocult. [online]. 2008, n.16. ISSN 1852-4508.

"Pewma" - dream- in Mapuche culture responses to a kind of ancestral communication and social practice which has been integrated in present Mapuche artistic expressions as a part of the process of retraditionalization working in them supporting their own cultural identity and different one like a strategy to mask western aesthetics canon upon which these expressions base their discourses. In this sense, the Mapuche poetic, in general, introduces a homological process into the communicative interaction of traditional culture rooted in a sacred vision of the cosmos where the "pewma" and ritual prayers such as "yeyipun", "nguillatun" or the "machi ül" are linking resorts between tangible and intangible, human and supernatural, thus becoming a support and mechanism of a discourse that opens like an ethos extension of traditional culture.

Keywords : Mapuche art; Poetry; "Pewma"; Retraditionalization.
