In this paper, characteristics of cultures based on orality and those based on writing are confronted, in order to approach the writing problem in languages wich have oral tradition and punctually to the writing of the language qom (toba). References will be provided concerning effects of writing on societies that traditionally do not practice it, on the basis of data provided from different perspectives, and by our own work on the qom (toba) groups.
