Abstract

GARIZOAIN, Gonzalo. Dentin formation as an age estimator: analysis of superficial and linear methodologies in a documented osteological collection (La Plata, Argentina). Rev. Mus. Antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.15, n.3, pp.81-90. ISSN 1852-060X.  http://dx.doi.org/http://doi.org/10.31048/1852.4826.v15.n3.37761.

Secondary dentine is a dental tissue that forms regularly at the pulp-dentine interface after the eruption of the tooth has finished, leading to a decrease in the pulp cavity over time. From radiographic images of permanent dentition, age estimation equations based on linear and surface measurements have been developed. Given the lack of local research on the performance of these methodologies, the present study proposes to evaluate two age estimation formulae based on linear and surface measurements of dental radiographs. A sample of dental radiographs of upper and lower canines belonging to 83 adult individuals from the “Prof. Dr. Rómulo Lambre” collection (FCM-UNLP) was selected. The estimations presented a bias of less than 10 years and average inaccuracies of 16 years of error in the two methodologies analyzed. On the other hand, a tendency to overestimate age in young individuals and to underestimate age in older individuals was found with both methods. However, the methodology based on surface measurements provided better results in individuals younger than 50 years.
